Events Planning- the Sunrise Sector in India

Article published in Small Enterprise India- http://www.smallenterpriseindia.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=940:events-planning-the-sunrise-sector-in-india-&catid=82:featureone

Event and wedding management is catching up India faster. So far, it was a western concept, but since last decade, the trend of hiring professionals for any event is going up. If few years back it was restricted to Tier I cities, now people in Tier II, Tier III cities are taking professional assistance for organising events.

Blame it to today's erratic work schedules and busy lifestyle; people do not have time to plan and at the same time, want to get the best of everything. The area that comes under the ambit of event management today includes marketing events, trade shows, MICE events, internal corporate events, television segments, sports events, entertainment events, award nite, domestic events and personal events. With a relatively new breed of companies for whom events are an indispensible, need professionals to manage them.

Currently, the organised event management industry in India is pegged at around Rs 3,000 crore and it is expected to touch Rs 5,000 crore by 2015. According to a recent PwC study, the market has grown tremendously in the past two years from the Rs 1,800-crore industry two years back. The key reason for this growth is the influx of international brands and increased western exposure.

But it is a fact that, still the industry is in an infant stage and unorganised. There are a very few handful of professional and organised players. In the backdrop of the growing the number of events and weddings in India, the current demand-supply gap is huge. As the industry has immense potential to grow, it is now opening up opportunities for individuals and start-ups to foray into the space.

It is difficult to pinpoint exactly when event management started carving a segment for itself in the country. In the mid nineties, when we started, it was very difficult to convince people to take professional assistance for planning their events and brands have n’t recognized events as a marketing strategy. But now it has become more viable to conduct even small celebrations through the event management company.

Events help companies to reach out to customers more closely and it is an economical advertising medium than conventional forms like television or print. Entrepreneurs can integrate a live event into a well-defined marketing plan. Companies or brands can select and reach out directly to their target audience. They can also control their budgets at the end of the event to tangibly analyse if the event was a success or not.

Apart from other events, if you will take only the 'Indian wedding market', the industry is currently roughly estimated to be around Rs 125,000 crore, which is growing at 25-30 per cent annually. Depending upon the 'lavishness' and 'affordability' of the individual, the cost of the wedding could vary anywhere between Rs 5 lakh and Rs 5 crore. As the dialogue from the movie 'Band Baaja Baarat' goes, "Recession ho ya inflation.. shaadi toh hoti rahegi" (The wedding industry will not be affected due to the consequences of either inflation or recession.

Weddings will happen; the spending amount may differ or may increase or decrease). This is apt for the Indian sentiments, they may not spend lavishly and may cut down some expenses, however, they will do the wedding. Another major reason for growth in demand is that Indians are concentrated in every part of the world. And globally, Indian wedding planners are also in high demand. So, the industry opens up many opportunities and scopes.

But this does n’t mean that donning the role of an event manager is an easy job. Event management is an art, which requires tremendous skills in designing and organisation skills. It involves conceptualising, visualising, budgeting and executing. Companies and individuals approach event managers with a vague idea and a budget in mind and it is entirely up to the event manager to develop and improvise it to for a completely successful output, planning and coordinating the entire thing.

Event management degrees are now getting popular to ensure professionalism in the field and to create specialized event managers. One has to remember that to become a successful event manager, you may need to put in 365 days a year and have immense patience and insight to get into the minutest details. Good networking skills, ability to think out of the box, time management and problem-solving capacity are some other qualities essential for this role.

Therefore it is really important for entrepreneurs who are getting into this lucrative segment to be fined tuned. Brands also should ensure professionalism while hiring their event manager. Lower quotes may be attractive, but not a guarantee for an impeccable service.
As the future only promises to be brighter, bigger and better let’s wait and see how it would be for the existing and would be entrepreneurs!

Purposive Intellectual Property for Value Addition in Branding

Article published in Small Enterprise India.com http://www.smallenterpriseindia.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=919:purposive-intellectual-property-for-value-addition-in-branding&catid=82:featureone )

Employing purposive intellectual property in creating a brand image is one of the biggest challenges facing event mangers across the globe. In the new and competitive marketing strategies advertisers often loose sight of the actual goals while creating intellectual property for their clients. The clients on the other hand do not fully understand and appreciate the employability of such intellectual property towards adding value to their business. These ideas must be generated creatively, imaginatively and proactively with focus on the target audience and marketing objective tangibles.

Elements of Successful Branding

Event managers are in hurry to churn out ideas that are less purposive and often misdirected. The large numbers of events such as beauty pageants, contests, fashion shows and expos that are being hosted on a regular basis do not add much value to the brand, since they are unable to abide by the basic principles of branding. In today’s extremely competitive environment branding must create a unique identity for the product or service so that it is distinctly recognizable, desirable and credible. In order to achieve this goal the intellectual property must be designed to draw attention, engage and associate the customer with the product or service. Promotional events have to be oriented towards cementing a more enduring emotional bonding with the audience.

Parameters to Gauge Effectiveness of Intellectual Property

Clients will invariably demand evaluation of the returns on investment in terms of money and effort. However in the case of developing and employing intellectual property one needs to go beyond the realms of merely assessing the returns on investment to take a more long term perspective and evaluate the returns in terms of impression, association, engagement, objectives and opportunities that are generated through the intellectual property.

  • Creating Impression: Impression in most cases refers to the mere number of views that have been achieved through the campaign. On the internet this is easily determined through the number hits or clicks to that page. However practically the impression should go mere viewing and take in account the perception generated through the impression. Perception in this context refers to the kind of attitude the customer develops towards the product. The way he feels about the product and the level of emotional engagement that takes place. Discussions on social platforms are great indicators of perception created through an intellectual property employed. The IIFA ceremonies have become a much awaited event year on year as millions of Indians associate national pride to the event.
  • Developing Association: Association with the product can be of two types –attribute based and non attribute based. Attribute based association refers to the customers knowledge about the features and characteristics that are intrinsic to the product and their performance parameters. The scent of a particular brand of perfume or the looks of a design of a brand of shirts. However on the other hand non attribute based association deals on an abstract level wherein certain feel about the product is emphasized such as opulence associated with owning a Rolls Royce or the level of fun anticipated when visiting the Disney Land.
  • Generating Engagement: An intellectual property that is designed correctly and employed purposefully will generate engagement in terms of the ‘Buzz’ that will be created about the product. The social web is the ideal place to gauge this ‘Buzz’ where the number of shares, likes or taggings will reflect the interest and debate/ discussion generated by the campaign or event about the product. The positive online buzz and word of mouth advertising can work wonders for the product at an accelerated rate of spread of impression. Smart intellectual properties when deployed purposefully have the potential of creating millions of likes and shares in a matter of days. The Airtel’s ‘Har ek friend zaroori hota hai‘was one of the most talked about ads on the social platforms for a long time after initial launch.
  • Harnessing Opportunities: In order to effectively harness the true potential of the market the intellectual property must create opportunity for the growth of business. Any specific marketing initiative must have adequate and distinct advantages over other conventional methods to be justifiable in terms of finances and effort committed towards it. It should result in evoking a positive response and attitude among the target audience which shall subsequently boost the business. The Femina Miss India event has been credited for boosting sales in the cosmetics and beauty care segments of all brands across the board throughout the country.
  • Achieving Objectives: This is the most difficult of the measurable involved in evaluating the effectiveness of a particular intellectual property. The process is long drawn and hence conclusive evidence in terms of tangibles cannot be collated. However any client worth his reputation and money will be able to gauge the overall feel and mood that is created through an event or campaign to able to evaluate the intellectual property at an abstract level. The overall communication of a forceful brand image is more of a matter of perception rather than hard data analysis.

Maximizing the Commercial Value of an Intellectual Property

Effective branding and strategies for brand creation is one of the highest priorities for any business in today’s world of marketing saturation. Funds being always limited, deriving maximum commercial value out of the intellectual property invested in, is a natural focus for any business.

  • Right Focus: The best results are achieved when the intellectual property is focused. What works well for a pizza restaurant or car company may not produce the same results for an academic institution. The Idea’s ‘No idea….Get idea’ campaign is case in point here.
  • Timing: There are two aspects of timing an intellectual property for maximizing gains. In a long term perspective, the idea to relate to the social outlook of the day. A musical evening might have drawn huge crowds in the eighties but was not be as effective as a fashion show in the nineties. The short term aspect of timing is the prevailing mood of the audience. Organizing an inert neighborhood cricket championship right after the IPL season is certain to generate more interest than hosting a volley ball league. The Lay’s World cup flavors idea worked wonders in 2011.
  • Flexibility: Both brand creation and developments are dynamic in nature. Thus the ideas must incorporate inherent flexibility to add new dimensions at a later stage. In a rapidly evolving consumer scenario the ideas must allow for shifting of focus in order to retain the relevance and attractiveness of the brand. The Vodafone Zoozoo superman 3G campaign lent tremendous flexibility to cater for various types of projections in the sequels.
  • Brand Plan: The intellectual property must be integrated with the overall brand plan. The plan must include concrete provisions to protect, manage and leverage the idea to for long term brand success. The Amul Butter slogans on billboards across have outlived competition because of having been intricately integrated with the overall brand plan over the years.

A purposive intellectual property provides the brand with competitive business advantage and enhances the overall brand value. The client needs to be made aware of the long term implications and the integration plan of a particular intellectual property with the strategic brand plan. This will boost their confidence in the idea and provide assurance for the returns on investment.

Its All about Being a Team

We have all seen atleast in pictures, the geese flying in the ‘V’ shape, but have you ever wondered why it is so? Well, as each bird flaps its wings, it creates an uplift for the bird immediately following it. By flying in a V shape, the whole flock adds a minimum 71% greater flying range than if each bird flew on its own! That’s how team work pays!!!!

In the same way, teams have predominant place in every organisation. Teams have become the latest management obsession as joint effort ensures more success and is becoming backbone of every organisation. Gone are the days when we are our own boss and do our work independently without ever seeking assistance.

Today employees work together and contribute their skills, knowledge, talent and abilities in the quest to achieve common goals. Yet, many of us still prefer to do it alone rather than working in teams. At this juncture, it pays to understand the importance of this new culture of team work and how it really makes a difference.

Benefits of team work for the team members: Teamwork makes things easier and reduces your individual workload, as the saying goes’ many hands make light work’. The joint effort will helps you to achieve goals quicker and produce incredible results. There will be an unbeatable feeling of empowerment that comes from achievements which you could never have otherwise been able to manage alone.

As a leading magazine reflected the thought of a team worker rightly remarks, “It makes me feel part of something larger than what my job position describes as my role”. Teamwork will definitely build your self esteem and confidence, and it creates a budding sense of community, which is a pre-requisite to make tasks smooth and to retain a warm atmosphere.

Benefits of team work for the organisations: One tangible benefit of team work is its higher quality output with the involvement of everyone in the process than single handed performers, where individual weaknesses are compensated. It cannot be ignored that more input leads to better ideas and decisions.

Teamwork develops personal relationships in companies which is a motivating force and creates a sense of loyalty and self esteem. If the team has been chosen carefully, you may get a good range of abilities, fields of expertise and personality types, so for every situation there should be at least one person who can deal with it. Also, a group meeting is often very useful for ironing out flaws in a plan, before testing it out. People working in groups are more productive when tasks require working together and when rewards are related to group success.

   Points to Ponder

Understanding: First we need to understand why the team really exists, what are the common goals, vision and purpose besides what is your own unique role and responsibilities as part of the team.

Interaction: Team work calls for constant personal interaction and open communication. Sometimes, more than work, it is the pressure to conform to some norms that causes frustrations. Often you choose not to confront a difference with your superiors or peers out of fear or rebuke. But this silence will not let you stay in peace, but instead it exacts a psychological price by generating feelings of anger, humiliation and resentment, which will impact on your interactions with others and also your productivity and creative abilities before you realize. Openly communicate sort out all the differences you have with your boss or colleagues.

Contribution: It’s a challenge to be a contributing member of a team. You can focus on what you are good at, leaving the rest to others with distinct skills. You can also learn new skills from each other thus enhancing your individual proficiencies.

Cooperation: You have to be prepared to help others as well as open to accepting help when needed. To accomplish more work you need the help and cooperation of your colleagues and superiors.  Team spirit is not about competition, but cooperation as you willingly join hands and combine efforts. This is not to say that you as an individual is no longer important. But you have to go beyond the individual accomplishments to be a true team player. You have also to stand by each other as you do your best to support, encourage and inspire everyone.

Its actually a great privilege to be a part of a team once you master the fundamentals and start   working together.

Outdoor Weddings: 12 Planning Tips

The open sky and weddings just go together. Whether public or private, outdoor weddings are great for dramatic settings. But if you place your celebration outside, there are many choices and decisions to make. Here are 12 wedding planning tips for your outdoor wedding ceremony

1. Choose a "safe" date. If you avoid too humid and rainy season, you might keep weather disturbances to a minimum.

2. Complement your surroundings, don’t compete with them. The natural beauty of your chosen setting shouldn’t need a lot of embellishment.

3. Take a careful look at how your guests will reach your wedding site. Think about exits. Make sure that guests don’t stumble through darkness as they leave.

4. Assure that your guests will have access to restrooms.

5. Ask your floral designer, caterer and other vendors how much time they’ll need to set up at your site.

6. Factor electrical needs into your plans.

7. Ensure your plans meet local ordinances — get appropriate permits and inspections.

8. Use microphones so your guests don’t have to struggle to hear the wedding ceremony.

9. Protect the food. Ask your caterer to take special precautions to preserve the freshness of the food.

10. Proper lighting is key. If nature can’t or won’t supply what’s necessary, call on an expert.

11. Have your wedding site sprayed for mosquitoes, fleas and gnats two days before the event.

12. During the event, use citronella candles. You might informally supply insect repellent if your site teems with unfriendly pests.

Following this outdoor wedding advice can help you avoid an outdoor wedding nightmare!

Who and When : Kerala’s top two business families cemented their bond through the alliance of a marriage- Mary, daughter of Mr & Mrs Joy Alukkas was tied the knot with Antony, son of Mr & Mrs Jose C Chacko Chirakkekaran. The nuptial was held on 5th May at Lourdes Church Thrissur. The stage was set for one of Kerala’s grandest event with the two grand receptions at Lulu Convention Centre, Thrissur on the same day and at Le-Meridien , Kochi on 8th May.

Fwd Reports

May 5th : Lulu Convention Centre, Thrissur

The event kicked off at 6:00 pm as the bride-groom showed up the venue in a white Rolls Royce resplendent in white n black, the traditional western wedding attire and holding pink bridal bouquets. As the flower girls dressed in white and bridal maids in purple frocks too got down, the show started.

The event was held at an air conditioned outdoor venue and had about 4000 guests to wish the newly wed.  As the event was based on a colour theme the entire structure right from the main entrance, pathway to the main hall and stage was completely covered with lavender, white, purple and lilac shades.

The décor, rather than being ornate looked grand and elegant as the complete ambience was made using clothes, flowers and crystal balls along with a thematic cake and candle. The stage was completely decorated with flowers. LED city colours imported from Dubai, moving beams and LED par cans were used for a great impact. Around 200 round table seating was arranged with a centre candle on each.

Live performances by Shehabaz Aman & Gayathri, and choir violin performance with cello, viola and normal violins was a treat for eyes as well as ears.

May 7th: Hotel Le Meridien, Kochi

There was a musical evening with a mix of ghazals, semi-classical, melodies and filmy by playback singer Karthik and team. A live performance by an Italian harpist was something new to Keralites.

Planner’s Verdict:

The event was managed by Parinaya Wedding Planners, the wedding division of Impresario Event Management Company.Simple, natural and elegant, that’s how they wanted it to be” says Harish Babu, Managing Director Parinaya. “And a colour scheme was the perfect way to make it,”  he continues.

Purple is a great choice when you want something a little different and not as bold as the primary colours. It is a relaxed colour that has a very romantic feel and thereby adds a fairytale element to the wedding. The ‘White’ and ‘Gold’ theme perfectly matches as the bride-groom splurge in aureate adornments. The unique backdrop of white flowers, symbolizing purity was absolutely stunning.

What’s different- The bride-groom were positioned right at the entrance and greets each guests walking in. The stage was meant only for the artists.

The wedding was truly a joyous occasion which will remain forever etched in the memories of those who attended it. FWD wish the newly married couple a happy married life ahead and hope they enjoy ever-lasting conjugal bliss.

Again, since it is not their line of business, they may not be able to obtain the best services for the benefit of the couple. This is the reason why you may need to get a wedding planner to oversee your wedding vent.
